Guided Hunts for Coyotes, Gray Foxes, and Bobcats Southern Arizona has a variety of predators ranging from coyotes and gray fox to bobcats. Predator hunting during the off-season or in between guiding big game hunters is one of our favorite past-times. It is also a good management tool for controlling the predator population in our game areas. We offer guided hunts for these animals which involve coaxing them with a mouth call or electronic caller. Coyotes and foxes mostly fall victim to the call, but occasionally, a bobcat may stalk-in to check out the noise. Be prepared for some excitement and fast shooting when any of these varmints come charging in! Also as a bonus, some hunters can't resist taking a few monster jackrabbits while on their guided predator or varmint hunt.
We offer a guided predator hunt on a daily rate basis. Daily rate hunts can be either 1 full day in duration or multiple days in duration. We recommend more than one day to increase your odds. Non-resident hunters will provide their own lodging at a hotel and will meet a guide daily in the field. The closest places to stay can be recommended. Hunters must bring a packed lunch and transport themselves to the edge of town where they will be met by the guide and taken a field. A typical day of predator hunting takes place near the Tucson area from about 6am to 11am (which we have found to be the best time for excitement) and resumes after a lunch break until sunset. Face nets, gloves, and full camo are strongly recommended. Camo patterns for the desert hunts should be in the lighter gray/brown shades. Our top choices are Sitka Gear Optifade Open Country or Natural Gear. Other patterns that work well are Mossy Oak Brush, Outfitter Camo, and King's Desert Shadow. Stay away from the darker camo patterns or the really bright "prairie" varieties. Rifles are preferred for coyotes, since we hunt them in open country and these varmints tend to be wary. Ranges could be anywhere from 40 to 300 yards, but average 100 yards. Centerfire cartridges such as .223, .22-250, .243 or similar cartridges work very well. Bullet choice for centerfire varmint rifles is of personal preference, but we like to use Barnes bullets (usually loaded in Federal Premiums) because they stay together when shooting through brush (which is common on our predator hunts). Note: special laws and restrictions apply for hunting with AR-15 and other semi-auto rifles, such as; the magazine must not be able to hold more than 5 rounds and no full metal jacket bullet usage. Hunters must buy a hunting license before meeting. No special tags are needed for gray foxes, coyotes, or bobcats (unless taking a bobcat out of state), only a valid Arizona Hunting License: Non-resident hunting license - $61.25 for 3 days or less, $151.25 over 3 days, all Youth hunter hunting licenses (Residents or Nonresidents under age 19) are $26.50. Resident adult hunting license - $32.25. Seasons: We conduct predator hunts during October through Mid-March. The best time for predator hunting is November-February. We schedule hunters in between our big game seasons. Space is limited. Predator hunts usually fill fast, so if you are really interested in a certain date, book early.
