Guided Hunts for Coyotes, Gray Foxes, and Bobcats Southern Arizona has a variety of predators ranging from coyotes and gray fox to bobcats. Predator hunting during the off-season or in between guiding big game hunters is one of our favorite past-times. It is also a good management tool for controlling the predator population in our game areas. We offer guided hunts for these animals which involve coaxing them with a mouth call or electronic caller. Coyotes and foxes mostly fall victim to the call, but on a rare occasion, a bobcat may stalk-in to check out the noise. Be prepared for some excitement and fast shooting when any of these varmints come charging in! Also as a bonus, some hunters can't resist taking a few monster jackrabbits while on their guided predator or varmint hunt.
We offer three types of packages for predator hunting, a daily hunt, a 3-day camp hunt and a Half day hunt. The first package is at a daily rate. This hunt can be either 1 or 2 full days in duration. Non-resident hunters that choose a daily-rate hunt will provide their own lodging at a hotel and will meet a guide daily in the field. For daily hunters, the closest places to stay will be recommended. Hunters on 1 or 2 day hunts must bring a packed lunch and transport themselves to the edge of town where they will be met by the guide and taken a field. The second package is a camp-type hunt if the hunt is to be 3 days. Three-day camp hunters will be provided with all meals and field accommodations. Airport pickup can be arranged for 3-day predator hunts if flying-in the evening before the hunt. The third package is a half day hunt (6am until 11am), which is offered during the warm month of March only. Our guided predator hunting takes place from about 6am to 11am (which we have found to be the best time for excitement) and will resume after a lunch break until dark. Face nets, gloves, and full camo are strongly recommended. Camo patterns for the desert hunts should be in the lighter gray/brown shades, such as the number one choice, Natural Gear. Other patterns that seem to work well are Mossy Oak Brush, Outfitter Camo, and King's Desert Shadow. Stay away from the darker camo patterns or the really bright "prairie" varieties. Rifles are preferred for coyotes, since we hunt them in open country and these varmints tend to be wary. Ranges could be anywhere from 40 yards to 300 yards, but average 100. Centerfire cartridges such as .17 Rem., .223, .22-250, .243 or similar cartridges work well. Bullet choice for centerfire varmint rifles is of personal preference, but we like the polymer tipped or hollow point boat tail bullets. Larger rimfire cartridges, like the .22 Magnum or .17 HMR can be used, but shot placement is very crucial, since these rounds produce little downrange energy. If bringing a buddy, it is a good idea for one hunter to use a shotgun while the other uses a scoped rifle and alternate guns between stands. This allows for both close range shots to be covered with the scatter gun, as well as the long range shots with a rifle. Shotgun shot sizes for predators should be from BB to #4 Buckshot in 3-inch magnum. Hunters must buy a license before arrival. No special tags are needed for gray foxes, coyotes, or bobcats, only a valid Arizona Hunting License: Non-resident hunting license - $61.25 for 3 days or less, $151.25 over 3 days, all Youth hunter hunting licenses (Residents or Nonresidents under age 19) are $26.50. Resident adult hunting license - $32.25. Seasons: The best time for availability and predator hunting is December through March 30th. Hunts usually fill fast, so if you are really interested in a certain date, book early.
